The recently renovated Ford Nature Center in Mill Creek MetroParks serves Mahoning County’s nature education needs. The renovation project, which was completed in 2023, included a nature exhibit hall with interactive exhibits for all ages to learn more about the nature and wildlife found at Mill Creek Park, Lanterman’s Mill and all other parts of the MetroParks.
The Ford Nature Center offers immersive experiences, including a panoramic view of the Native Wildflower Meadow from the observation area, an interactive map table in the history room to explore the park’s trails and a tranquil bird observation room to enjoy native species in their natural habitat.

Outside the Nature Center
Rooftop Garden
Experience a vibrant rooftop garden featuring a diverse mix of plant species. Located atop the Exhibit Hall behind the Nature Center, this unique space is designed with a series of colorful planted trays. The garden includes sedges, alliums and select bulbs that attract pollinators like birds, bees and insects. These plants also help absorb rainwater to reduce stormwater runoff, promote well-being, lower ambient temperatures and conserve energy.
Native Wildflower Meadow
A signature feature of the Ford Nature Center grounds, the Native Wildflower Meadow is a thriving habitat created from over two dozen native wildflowers and warm-season grasses. This diverse ecosystem attracts a variety of pollinators, including birds and insects, while providing essential habitat for ground-dwelling animals. With its ever-changing display of colorful blooms, unique textures and diverse wildlife, the meadow offers something new and beautiful to experience each season.
Outdoor Classrooms
Once the site of the Ford family’s tennis court, the first outdoor classroom is nestled within the wildflower meadow along the tree line and is accessible via The Bill Whitehouse Education Trail. This space features natural seating and amenities, making it a great spot for learning and connecting with nature. The second outdoor classroom, located behind the Education Building, features terraced sandstone block seating and a concrete patio, perfect for group activities.
Virginia J. Axtmann Trail for All People
This easy, 0.1-mile paved trail is designed for accessibility, offering people of all abilities the chance to explore the scenic wooded areas surrounding the Ford Nature Center. Take a relaxed stroll through diverse forest habitats and discover the variety of plant species that thrive here. Educational signage along the trail offers insights into the natural environment.
The Bill Whitehouse Education Trail
This 0.11-mile trail offers a leisurely walk along the edge of the Native Wildflower Meadow, providing access to key destinations like the outdoor classrooms and the Little Free Library. It also serves as a connecting path to the Ecology Trail and the Virginia J. Axtmann Trail for All People, making it an ideal route for exploring the educational and natural features of the Ford Nature Center.
Education Building
Originally serving as the garage for the Robinson and Ford families, this three-story building once featured an upper-level apartment. Today, it serves as a hub for a variety of educational activities, supporting both indoor and outdoor learning experiences.
